What Is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?
How brands get cited inside AI-generated answers, and how it differs from traditional SEO.
7 min readGenerative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of structuring content so that generative AI systems — Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini — are more likely to cite, quote, summarize, or recommend it when answering a question. It sits alongside SEO rather than replacing it.
GEO vs SEO vs AEO — the terms aren't interchangeable
It helps to separate three related but distinct goals: SEO optimizes for ranking and click-through on a traditional results page. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) optimizes for being the direct answer in featured snippets and voice results. GEO optimizes for being cited or paraphrased inside a generative AI's written response — a different surface with different rules.
The clearest way to think about the difference: SEO earns you a position on a results page. GEO earns you a position inside the answer itself, where there's no page to click through to at all.
What generative engines actually reward
AI systems favor content with clear entity definitions, a direct-answer block near the top rather than a slow narrative lead-in, and fact density backed by named, checkable sources. Content written to be quoted out of context — a self-contained paragraph that still makes sense without the rest of the page around it — performs better than content that only makes sense in sequence.
The shared foundation with SEO
GEO and SEO diverge in tactics but share the same technical floor: content has to be reliably crawlable and indexed, structured data has to accurately describe what's on the page, and the site has to already carry some baseline authority. Neither discipline works as a substitute for the other's fundamentals.
What this means in practice
Structure your most important pages with a genuine direct-answer paragraph near the top, use specific named facts rather than vague claims, cite sources for anything factual, and mark up the page with structured data that matches what's visibly on it. None of this guarantees a citation — no one can honestly promise that — but it removes the reasons a generative engine would skip over the content entirely.
